"Relay for Life"

Support a special event that will raise funds for local organizations that fight breast cancer and support breast cancer survivors.

Each year, BAYS organizes a “Challenge Event” for its members, all young women living with breast cancer. These events have included hikes to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite (in 2005 and 2007), to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (in 2006), and to alpine lakes along the Pacific Crest trail in the Inyo National forest (in 2008). In addition to providing a significant physical challenge for the participants, these events are fundraisers.

This year’s event, the Relay for Life, is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and unites communities across the country to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight for elimination of the disease. BAYS will field a team of young breast cancer survivors in Sonoma, California on August 1st, 2009. Team members take turns walking or running around a track during a 24-hour period, beginning with a Survivors’ Lap in which cancer survivors take a victory lap around the track. A candlelight ceremony is held in the evening to honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease.

Proceeds from this year’s event will support BAYS’ member programs, including facilitator and childcare expenses for support group meetings. Additional funds raised will be distributed to Círculo de Vida, the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic, and the American Cancer Society in amounts to be determined by the BAYS Board of Directors after all funds are received. Círculo de Vida and the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic are local organizations that provide services or support to underserved individuals with cancer.

BAYS,Círculo de Vida and the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic are all qualified 501(c)(3) organizations:

1. Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS)
BAYS is a support and action group for women age 45 and under who are living with breast cancer. BAYS is a diverse group united by its members’ passion to survive this disease and to end the epidemic, especially as it affects young women. BAYS provides support group meetings to its members, fitness and wellness events and other support services to survivors -- from the newly diagnosed to those battling recurrent or metastatic disease to long time survivors.

2. Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic (CMCC)
CMCC provides alternative medicine treatments -- including acupuncture and Chinese herbs -- to poor and low income women living with cancer. Many BAYS members have relied on alternative treatments to complement the chemotherapy and other traditional medical care they have received, and know how important such treatment can be to a patient's well-being.

3. Círculo de Vida,
Círculo de Vida provides an invaluable and unparalleled service to Latinos living with cancer and their loved ones-- most of them immigrants, low-income, and without health insurance -- as they navigate a frightening illness and an increasingly complex medical system. Círculo's experienced staff help translate for the patient and physician at the time of diagnosis, offer in-hospital and in-home support during surgery and treatment, provide a wide range of Spanish-language support groups for the patients and their children, as well as case management, resource referrals and in-home support for the terminally ill.

4. American Cancer Society, The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
